How is Age represented in the 'Eastenders' clip?

 Plan:

This clip shows a range of age from a young teenager to an old man. The old man, Patrick is represented to be wise and talks in the whole clip about his past. The young are represented to be curious on Patrick's past.

Stereotypes
Youths - Positives: Smart, Educated, Lively
- Negatives: Drugs, Hoodies, Lazy, Rude

Elderly - Positives: Freedom, Relaxed, Quiet, Respected, Wise
- Negatives: Dependent, Weak, Lonely, Boring

Essay:

The Easterners clip starts off by showing by setting the scene in a family home, around a dinner table with a Jamaican family group of five. Easterners is set in East London which is conveyed to us as a friendly, welcoming environment. Firstly, a pan shot is used, this shows the audience the difference of age in a chronological order, however it begins on Patrick who is the oldest. This represents the older generations to come across as more important and superior to the younger generation, this fits well with the elderly stereotype of being portrayed as highly respected.
in the clip. The younger characters are dressed casually in clothes such as jeans and jumpers, whereas Patrick is dressed in a waistcoat and shirt. This suggests that the older characters are more formal due to their jobs or they want to set a good example to the their children.

Later on the scene, an establishing shot is then used which shows the limit of action for the shot, which is a family around a dinner table having a meal. This shot also shows all the people included in the scene and again shows the difference between ages. From this shot we can see that even though the table is circular, Patrick is at the head of the table which represents that again younger generations have respect and show this by letting him practically host the dinner and being the center of attention. Patrick is the oldest character in the scene and family, he is the most prevalent in all the shots which backs up his high status in comparison to the others. The younger characters are always

In one particular birds eye shot you can see the table and the family sitting around it. Whilst everyone else seems to be drinking champagne Patrick is drinking whiskey. This represents age in the term that older people can handle their drink more due to their experience, this is also a stereotypical drink for people of older ages, which is also demonstrated in various other programmes within the media. Patrick, who is the oldest character  in the family, is most prevalent in all the shots, this suggests he has a higher status and importance. Throughout the entire clip there are limited editing techniques shown because the soap is trying to show realism. Within the short extract the pace of the editing is quite slow, this is to highlight the majority age of the people in the shot. This is shown by using straight cuts and continuity editing which gives the impression of reality.

The occurring sound is made when Chelsea's phone rings right at the end, this is to draw the audiences attention to the phone and whose phone it is. This is a representation of age, creating an outlook that the youth are obsessed with technology, more so than their family as during a deep talk with her family Chelsea still answers the phone.
The record playing Jamaican music in the background is diegetic which represents people of an elderly age to be sentimental as Patrick has the record on whilst reminiscing about being a Jamaican in London with his family. However, there is no non diegetic music to show the family as being real.
